Update to Lucene 4.x

Description

Apache Lucene 4.0 is coming soon, we should be ready to support it.

true, my priority is to make sure this is not going to be a nightmare for users to upgrade to.
Still, it would be very handy for us to be able to pave roads, so that if we have to break a specific API we can plan ahead to not have to break it twice.

If any of you has suggestions or special wishes, please open new issues; or if you have an idea but no well defined requirement you're welcome to comment right here or on the mailing list.

Personally I dont want to see ANY new features. I'd much rather get the upgrade to lucene 4.6 sooner. That should ease the upgrade path. Then we can worry about all of the new hotness that 4.6 might allow

Right, we definitely want to hear about which of the new features you might want to see, so that we can prioritize.
I don't think we need a specific container: just use version 5.0, worst case we'll move lower priority improvements to 5.1+

Note that some of the lowest level improvements are going to be used transparently without any change in user API, just upgrading the version.
