Upgrade the checkstyle plugin to allow using Java 8 lambdas

Description

We need to upgrade the Checkstyle plugin so that it doesn't crash when encountering bytecode for lambdas.

The upgrade will need to include some style fixes too, as some violations were not being reported by the older version.
